The flagship fund has already benefited over 130 young athletes from Somerset in a variety of sports. TS5C sponsored athletes have already achieved significant results at both County and National level, and have competed for Team GB in international competitions.

17 year old Strode College student and TS5C supported Joe Nelson from Walton has just returned from competing in the European Open Handball Championships held in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The 16 strong Great Britain team were drawn in the toughest group which included some of the best teams in Europe.

The young team, some still 15 and only just finished their GCSE’s played eight demanding, fast paced, physical games against the host nation,Sweden as well as Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Belgium,Estonia, Russia and Austria.

The tournament was the first opportunity GB had experienced playing against tough opposition in front of large crowds and learn from teams who are likely to play at Olympic level in future years.

Nelson now turns his attention to pre season training and selection for his second GB cap at an under 18 tournament in Portugal in September.
