My first year in the youth category has come to an end, it has had some highs and lows and I have learnt a lot and mind a whole bunch of new friends in the process.
The last event of the year was the U20 British Triathlon Festival at Mallory Park.
I had unfinished business with this circuit having to pull up injured at this circuit last year whilst racing in the Inter Regional Championship. The plan was to race twice over the weekend, first in the individual race series on the Saturday and as the youth girl in the South West Region Team A on the Sunday.
It was an early start on Saturday, as the girls race was first with a race start time of 9.15. So plenty to do on arrival at 7.00am with registering, getting the bike checked before heading out to recce the course. It was then straight into transition to rack up the bike before warm up and into the wetsuit for the roughly 400m swim. The race went pretty well with a good swim and run but I lost a little ground on the bike, but I was happy to finish with an above mid finish result. It was always going to be hard to get into the mid 20’s as all the top ranking girls had turned up for this race resulting in a field of 68 entrants, probably the biggest of the year. Final rankings have still to be issued but I am hopeful of a top 30 ranking for the year.
It was then off to our accommodation for a rest, catch up watching my Hero Vick Holland win the world ITU champs before some food and an early bed before starting it all again tomorrow at an earlier time!
We arrived at the track a bit earlier on the Sunday to register and also to find out that the officials had moved around all the teams to their likings from what the regional coaches had put in. As a result I went out as the anchor person for SW Team B, but no point worrying about the team moves just get out there and race. I had a really good swim, 4th out of the water and setting the fastest swim time of all my South West team mates. I enjoyed the format and overall I was pleased with where the team came and the performance I provided.
Overall it has been a great year with some good races finishes and going to the School Games Final was the highlight of the year. Injury did play a part which has meant training has been not as good as it could have been and resulted in pulling up in a couple of races and withdrawing from others. I have learnt from this and hopefully the exercises and coaching I have had should put pay to this issue for next year, fingers crossed. I will race again in the Youth category at the top end next year with a number of girls moving up to Junior who finished ahead of me in the series. However you can’t rule out the competition moving up from TS3 to first year Youth, there was some really fast girls to keep an eye on next year!
It’s now back to training with some swimming comps thrown in through the Autumn and Winter before it all starts again in the spring.
