Bettine Harris with her helm Megan Ferguson have qualified to represent GBR sailing at the 420 dinghy European championships in Portugal and World Championships in Newport Rhode Island, USA.
Bettine, 15, from Kings of Wessex who began her sailing career at BCYC was competing in the final selector and RYA Youth National Championships in Largs Scotland over the Easter break. In a tense final days racing the pair managed to clinch the Girls team Silver Medal for the event and 3rd Girls for the selector series as a whole.
Bettine, the current Cadet class National Champion who is supported by Somerset Charity TS5C said “It was a really tough competition with so many varied wind strengths and frustrating conditions. We could only race on 3 days of out of the 5 days and it was bitterly bitterly cold”. She added “We sailed really well to guarantee our place in both the 420 Europeans Championships in Portugal and the World Championships in Newport Rhode Island. I’m really looking forward to these events and ready to learn and experience new things from international competition”
Bettine’s older brother Jamie, aged 17 supported by TS5C, also qualified for the 2018 420 class World Championships after the challenging selection series. Jamie is also really looking forward to another summer packed full of sailing including 470 (Olympic Class) European Championships in Portugal which is the first time he will have raced the Olympic boat.
