TS5C Sponsored Athlete
The flagship fund has already benefited over 130 young athletes from Somerset in a variety of sports. TS5C sponsored athletes have already achieved significant results at both County and National level, and have competed for Team GB in international competitions.

This season saw Bertie move up from the U13 age bracket to the cadets – Under 15’s. It was decided this would be the right age for him to start competing in the adult game as well as the junior game to broaden his scope.

He was recruited to join the Somerset Sabres, our locally based team which competes in the Senior British League, the UK’s national team competition. He also entered the Somerset County Championships senior event in October and incredibly managed to win, at 13 becoming the youngest ever holder of the title. It also meant he became county champion at every age group open to him from U13 singles right through to senior and including both the junior and the senior doubles titles.

In the Senior British League he helped the Somerset Sabres win the 2018/19 league championship title and he ended the season as the player with the highest win averages from the whole division nationally.

In the junior game he continued to compete on the circuit all around the UK picking up numerous titles throughout the season. He once again qualified to represent Somerset at the Schools’ National championships. This was his 6th successive year representing Somerset at this event, this time moving up the U16 age category. Despite being much younger than most competitors at the national finals Bertie held his own and fought through to the last stages and as a result came to the attention of the England selectors who picked him to play for England at the Senior Schools’ International in the Channel Islands. Despite being eligible to compete as a U14 he was asked to play up an age group in the England U16 B team. He and his team mate beat all the other nations’ A team to reach the final and only narrowly lose to the England A team and ensure England came away with both the Gold and the Silver medals.

In addition to these highlights Bertie enjoyed a great deal of additional success both home and abroad in events like the National Championships, the National Cup, The Prague Grand Prix plus numerous domestic junior and senior events, adding to a collection now nearing two hundred medals and trophies.

The fact that TS5C have selected Bertie to be a finalist for the Somerset Young Sports Person Award is a great honour and a super way to cap an intense season.
